Typically, stuck thermostats only happen in automobiles. However, if it seems your thermostat may be “stuck,” it may just be that the battery is dead, if you have a digital model, or perhaps you are experiencing some kind of electrical short.
That said, thermostats are not infallible and can still experience a host of other issues. If your thermostat seems to be acting up and you’re not sure why, our licensed professionals at Ambient Edge can take a look. Give us a call today to schedule a service.
The House Is Freezing Cold Year-Round
At What Temperature Should I Set My Thermostat? Does it seem like your house is always cold, despite the fact that you keep your thermostat at 70 degrees year-round? The problem may actually be that your thermometer is in a spot where it gets direct sunlight beaming on it. As a result, it normally displays a temperature much higher than the temperature in your house because the thermostat itself is warm – not your house.
This is the cause of two separate issues. In the summer, the thermostat will cause your air conditioning to keep running long after it should have turned off because the thermostat detects a temperature in the house that is too warm. In the winter, it will stop your furnace from coming on because your home will appear warmer than it actually is.
Of course, moving the thermostat should fix this problem, but if that’s easier said than done, you’ll need a professional to come and help you with the electrical side of things.
The Thermostat Is Not Level
If a thermostat is not level, this can affect its performance just as much as if it was dirty. In both cases, the thermostat can cause your air conditioning to cycle on and off ad nauseum, or just to continue running all the time. Neither of these situations is good for your energy consumption, your utility bill, or the life of your HVAC system.
If this is the case, especially if you have a mercury thermometer, you may need a professional’s help to right the thermostat and get it back to working the way it should be.
The Temperature in Your Home Varies Greatly
Have you noticed the temperature in your home varies wildly from one extreme to the next? This may mean that your thermostat needs to be recalibrated, particularly its heat anticipator. You may be able to do this yourself, but if you don’t feel comfortable, it is no problem at all for Ambient Edge. No job is too big or too small for our team!
The Thermostat Is Dusty
When was the last time you cleaned your thermostat? If it wasn’t recently, then there may be a buildup of dust and debris that is impacting its ability to accurately measure the temperature in the room. This is an easy problem to solve yourself by simply removing the plastic outer casing and, with a very soft brush, delicately brushing off its coil and contact surfaces.
It is most effective to clean the thermostat first at its lowest setting, then again at its highest setting. Once you’ve done both, you can reset the thermostat to your preferred temperature setting, and it should be right as rain.
The Thermostat Has Reached the End of Its Life
If your thermostat is old, and it just isn’t functioning the way it should, then it may very well be time to replace it. In fact, did you know that mercury thermostats are not as accurate as today’s digital thermostats? Sure, it feels good to get your money’s worth when you get years out of a product, but nothing lasts forever, and it can feel just as good to reap the benefits of a product that has since seen some upgrades.
