Install a High-Efficiency Showerhead
If you’ve used the same old shower head for years, chances are it’s draining the water supply. Invest in one of the many new low-flow showerheads, most of which are inexpensive and easy to install yourself. Low-flow showerheads use two and a half gallons of water or less per minute, and you can decrease your water usage even more by shortening your shower time or turning off the water when you’re not actively using it.
Fix a Running Toilet or a Leaky Faucet
A faucet with a slow drip or a toilet that occasionally runs might not seem like a big deal, but the amount of wasted water adds up quickly. In fact, a moderate faucet leak can waste up to 20 gallons of water per day. Fixing a faucet or toilet can range from easy to difficult, depending on your level of experience and the age of the fixture. Most people use and dispose of water once, without giving it a second thought. In many cases, reusing water for another purpose can help you save hundreds of gallons in the long run. For instance, when washing produce, don’t let the water run down the drain. Instead, collect it in a bucket and use it to water plants or for flushing.
