Ambient Edge is pleased to announce that Ember Hughes has won our Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship. Diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia at the young age of 15, Hughes wrote her winning essay about the way that her cancer diagnosis changed her life.

“I can’t put this experience into words that justify everything I experienced during that time,” she wrote. However, her friends and family, especially her parents, helped her to ground herself and deal with the myriad emotions that come with hearing that you have cancer.

Ember Hughes’ story shows the courage of all cancer survivors. While volunteering as a student trainer at her high school, Hughes had an attack of severe pain in her abdomen that forced her to leave practice early. Later that day, September 13, 2018, she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia.

Today, Ember Hughes attends Grand Canyon University. Inspired by the care she received during her time in the hospital, she plans to study nursing on her path to becoming a nurse anaesthetist.

“Becoming a nurse will help me make an impact on someone else’s life,” she wrote in her winning essay. At Ambient Edge, we’re happy to assist someone like Ember, who is on the path toward helping others despite the immense tragedy of her own cancer diagnosis in the past.

About the Ambient Edge Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship

In the air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating industry, there are plenty of hazardous materials. Unfortunately, a job improving air quality sometimes means that we come into contact with materials known to cause cancer. That’s partly why the team at Ambient Edge decided to establish the Students Affected by Cancer Scholarship.

The other reason is that many of us know friends or family members who have been diagnosed, and some of us have experienced cancer personally. This scholarship exists as a way to pay it forward, helping those like Ember who have been struck by tragedy as they overcome their experiences with cancer and go on to help others.

We wish Ember the best in her future endeavors and hope that the $1,000 scholarship award will assist her in fulfilling her plans.
