If your air conditioning unit has stopped working, many possible reasons can explain why. It could be your thermostat, your air filter, a problem with the condenser or compressor, or it may just be time to replace the unit, especially if it’s over 10 years old.

Reasons Why an Air Conditioner May Stop Working
If you’ve noticed your air conditioner isn’t running the same way it used to, or if it simply is not as energy-efficient as it once was, it’s important to get to the bottom of the problem. You want to figure out sooner rather than later what the issue is, especially if your AC is new, before a smaller issue escalates into what can become an unfixable problem.
Here are some of the more common issues affecting air conditioners, as well as some suggestions on how to fix them.
The Unit Blows Out Warm Air
Nothing can cause more dread with an air conditioner than turning it on during a heatwave, only for it to blow hot air in your face. Yuck. There are a few reasons why this might happen. Some of the simpler causes may be that a vent is closed, or that the thermostat needs fixing. Some more major causes may be that the unit is low on refrigerant, signaling a leak, or that there is a problem with the fan.
Either way, if your unit is blowing out warm air instead of cold, give a professional a call to come and take a look.
The Unit Won’t Turn On
If your air conditioner won’t turn on at all, this could be because you have a dirty air filter, or there is a minor issue with your thermostat. You may also want to check the circuit breaker to ensure it didn’t trip.
Check the AC shutoff switch to ensure it is not engaged and check the AC drain pan beneath the unit. If the pan is full or the drains or clogged, this may be enough to trigger the machine into safe mode, and it won’t turn on.
Failing these troubleshooting tips, if the machine still refuses to turn on, call an HVAC professional.
The Compressor Fails
Your compressor may have failed if:
- The system shakes when it starts.
- The system blows out warm air.
- The system frequently trips your circuit breaker.
- The system makes strange noises when it runs.
Don’t panic if you think your issue may be your compressor. This is not always a major problem and, as such, it doesn’t always cost an arm and a leg to fix. You’ll know your compressor issue is more serious if the unit frosts over or, conversely, overheats, or if it is cycling more frequently (turning off and on).
However, your issue may be related to something less severe, like an electrical issue, a problem with the refrigerant or oil levels, or pollutants in the system. If you’re experiencing any of the above issues with your AC, call our technicians at Ambient Edge for help.
The Unit Continuously Cycles On and Off
The way an air conditioner works when you allow it to cycle is that it turns on when it senses an increase in the temperature so as to regulate the climate of the room. When it cycles too frequently, however, you know there’s a problem with the unit.
There may be several explanations for why the unit is cycling too often. It may have a compressor issue, a fan issue, or an electrical issue. You should handle none of these things if you have no experience repairing air conditioners in the past. Let the AC Repair experts at Ambient Edge help by inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing the issue for you.
