If your air conditioning unit is down, you may want to save yourself a few dollars by trying some troubleshooting before calling a professional. While this is all well and good, we here at Ambient Edge cannot honestly recommend attempting to repair an AC unit yourself unless you have prior experience as an air conditioning repair person.
The reason for this is because when an air conditioner breaks down, there could be a number of reasons why. It could be everything from an issue with your thermostat to a dirty air filter, to something more serious like a refrigerant leak. Unless it’s something as simple as maintaining your air filter, and unless you truly know what you’re doing, you should call a professional at the first sign of trouble.
With decades of experience fixing all makes and models of air conditioners, we here at Ambient Edge have proven we are a company you can trust. Call us, and we will get your air conditioner working again in no time flat!
Air Conditioning Problems You CAN Try to Tackle Yourself
There are some minor issues that you may be able to address with your air conditioner without the need to call a professional. Of course, these tips don’t go into too much depth. Basically, you should check on the easy stuff, and if none of the easy stuff seems to fix the problem, then it’s time to call a professional to check it out.
Clean the Unit
One of the biggest problems we see when we go out on service calls is issues relating to a dirty air conditioner and/or air filter. Clogs of dust and debris do not mix well with electrical appliances.
You can carefully clean the condenser fins and fan blades and pull out any debris you may see either inside or around the unit. We see “carefully” because these parts are delicate and can break if you’re not gentle with them. And, of course, make sure the power to the unit is off before you attempt to clean it.
Check for a Tripped Fuse
If the unit is refusing to turn on, check your main electrical panel or breaker box to see if maybe the circuit tripped. If so, then reset it and see if that fixes the problem. If the issue is a blown fuse, then you’ll need to call an electrician.
If resetting the breaker fixes the problem, but only for a short while until it trips again, then the air conditioner probably does need some professional maintenance. There may be some other issue going on inside it that is causing it to regularly trip. You should fix this issue pronto, as it may be the result of an electrical short, which has the potential to cause a fire.
Check the Thermostat
If your air conditioner is running, but it’s not cooling the house off at all, make sure the unit’s thermostat is set to AC and that its temperature is lower than that of the room. Also, make sure the unit is not set to “fan” – settings become inadvertently changed sometimes. If your thermostat is not responding, it may need new batteries.
If you have an outside condensing unit, you can also double-check whether the compressor and fan are running. If not, and/or if the suggestions for fixing your thermostat don’t seem to fix the problem, then it’s time to give an HVAC professional a call to investigate the issue further.
When to Replace Your Air Conditioner
If your air conditioning unit is over 10 years old, and especially if it’s closer to 15, then you should look more into replacing the unit, rather than spending the money to repair it. At this point, there are more energy-efficient units on the market that can save you money every month on your utility bills. Plus, they’re better for the environment.
If you need to replace your air conditioner, we here at Ambient Edge can perform an evaluation of your home and help you find the system that is most optimized to effectively cool your living space.
