No matter how careful you are in your home in Arizona or Nevada, you are still likely to experience a clogged drain from time to time. Perhaps someone was brushing their hair over the bathroom sink or someone poured grease down the kitchen sink. Though, just because you have a clogged drain does not mean you need to call a professional right away. What follows are some tips you can use to try to clear the clogged drain yourself.
If, however, you give it your best shot and you still can’t seem to clear the drain, then it may be time to call the professionals. Our technicians here at Ambient Edge have the tools and skills necessary to help our customers clear their clogged drains in no time. Call us to set up a service appointment.
Plunger
Of course, the easiest solution is always the plunger. If the clog is decently close to the surface, you should be able to plunge your sink or toilet and clear the clog right away. Just make sure your sink is filled with water before you plunge. However, if the clog is a bit more complicated, you may want to follow up your plunging with one or more of the below suggestions.
Vinegar and Baking Soda
The combination of vinegar and baking soda solves many a household problem, and clogged drains are one of them. Pour half of a box of baking soda down your clogged drain. Then, chase it with a half-cup of vinegar and clog the drag either with the metal stopper or some cleaning rags or washcloths.
Wait about 30 minutes, then pour boiling hot water down the drain. This method is particularly helpful if the cause of your clog is grease or soap scum buildup.
Wire Hanger
Ah, the old bent wire hanger trick – but it’s an old trick because it works! Straighten out a wire hanger – it doesn’t have to be perfectly straight. Then, bend one end to make it into a small hook. Push it down into the drain and fish around. Try not to push the clog down further – work more toward pulling stuff up and out. When you feel you’ve gotten most of it out, run the hot water to clear the rest.
Sink Trap
Another way to clear a clog is to remove the trap under the sink. You can usually unscrew PVC plastic traps by hand without the need for additional tools. However, in some cases, you may find a pipe wrench to be particularly helpful.
Empty the trap (anywhere but the sink!) and make sure there are no clogs in the trap. Clean it out with a wire hanger, then a stiff brush. Wash it out with hot soapy water, then reattach it.
Drain Snake
When you think of a drain snake, you probably think of the kind of tool a plumber uses. However, there are handheld drain snakes that you can use in your household drain as well. They are normally available at your local hardware store and are relatively inexpensive.
You use a drain snake by “snaking” the tool into your drain until you reach the clog. Once the snake hits the clog, you can twist it around until it catches the clog, and when you pull the snake back up, it should bring the clog with it. A drain snake is an incredibly effective tool because its design allows it to reach around a drain’s corner to get those hard-to-reach clogs.
Dish Detergent
You may not know this, but if the clog lies within your toilet’s drain, you can actually use dish detergent to unclog it. Simply pour 1/4 cup of detergent into the toilet, then follow it with boiling hot water. The pressure of the water will force the detergent down into the drain. Then, plunge the drain. If you can’t seem to pull up the clog with the plunger, then you may have to don some rubber gloves and reach in after it.
