If you’ve just finished running a load of dishes, only to discover your dishwasher didn’t drain all the way, there can be several reasons for this. Many of these you can troubleshoot yourself, but in the event nothing you try works, you will need to call a professional you can trust.
Our technicians at Ambient Edge have been working for decades with all makes and models of dishwashers. If you need help with yours, give us a call.
Tips to Fix Your Dishwasher Yourself
Before you call in a professional, you may want to try some of the below tips to try and fix your dishwasher yourself and save a little money. If, however, none of these tips work, give our team at Ambient Edge a call. After all, you can’t, and shouldn’t, be without your dishwasher for long.
Check the Drain Hose
The whole point of the drain hose is right there in the name: to drain the dishwasher. Therefore, if the drain hose is clogged or kinked, it cannot drain the dishwasher as it should. Of course, be because the drain hose is also connected to your garbage disposal, the problem may not be with the hose itself but with the disposal.
Some things to check with the drain hose include:
- A clog
- A kink, or twist, which is preventing it from draining
- Improper placement, such as hanging down, which prevents a stream of water from flowing steadily through it
You may be able to unclog or untwist the drain hose yourself, but you may need some assistance with securing it to the underside of the cabinet if you find it is hanging down. If so, give us a call, and we’ll be more than happy to help. No job is too small for Ambient Edge.
Check the Drain Valve
An ill-functioning drain valve could also be the cause of your issue. Not all models of dishwashers have drain valves, but if yours does, then you should check it to see if it is having issues. If your model has a valve bracket, then you have a drain valve. (Check the manual to be sure of what you’re looking at.)
To test whether the valve is working properly, push on the valve bracket. While the moving around of most appliance parts could signal a problem, the valve bracket should move around easily. If it seems like it’s stuck in place, then the electrical part that controls it has failed, and you will need to replace it.
Clean the Air Gap
If you don’t have a garbage disposal, then you instead have an air gap, which is a small, typically stainless steel cylinder, installed next to the faucet on your sink. And, just like anything else involving a dishwasher, the air gap can become blocked up with old food, residue, and other debris.
Twist the air gap to remove it, then look inside to see if it there is a clog. Clean it out, put it back, and run the dishwasher again. Did it drain properly this time? If not, then you may need to call a technician for help.
Give It Some Love
Preventative maintenance is the best way to prevent your dishwasher from having draining issues. If, however, it’s too late for preventative maintenance, you can still give it a once-over to see if that fixes the issue.
Typically, maintaining a dishwasher involves the following tasks:
- Cleaning the filter, trap, and spray armholes
- Checking the dish racks for signs of wear (rubber sealant that peels off becomes debris that later will clog your machine)
- Checking for leaks or cracks in the rubber door seal
- Checking that the drain hose clamps are properly secured
- Ensuring the pre-heating mechanism is working properly and efficiently
If this seems like too much for you to remember, or if it may be too difficult to make sure you repeat this process at the same time every year, no worries! Ambient Edge offers preventative maintenance contracts to take of your dishwasher for you!
