If your indoor air quality is particularly musty after a long winter, you may wonder if running your air conditioner can do anything to improve it. The answer to that question is actually, yes, your air conditioner can significantly clean up your indoor air, provided you have had it properly maintained, and have cleaned and replaced the filter when necessary.
If, however, you run the air conditioner and it does nothing for your air quality or – gasp – makes it worse, don’t panic. Our experienced team at Ambient Edge will know what to do. How Air Conditioners Clean Up Your Air
The way an air conditioner works is like this. It pulls air from outside of your home into it, passes it through a filter and then over a cold coil, then pushes it out of the machine through its vents and into whichever room you have it in. The beauty of this process lies in the filter, which also pulls many different particles out of the air before passing the air into your home. This leads to a higher quality of air than you may be breathing in during the cooler months.
In addition to those potential contaminants, your air conditioner also pulls water-soluble particles out of the air, thereby reducing the amount of humidity in your home. That’s why your house is not only cooler but also drier than when you walk outside on a hot, humid day.
However, this is also why it is crucial you keep a close eye on your air conditioner’s filter. If you don’t clean it regularly and replace it periodically, it can’t do as good of a job cleaning up your air for you. And, of course, if your air conditioner is older than 10 years old, no amount of filter cleaning or replacing may be enough – you may just have to replace the entire unit and start fresh.
Ways to Improve Your Air Conditioner’s Performance
In addition to cleaning and changing your air conditioner’s filter (every 90 days if you don’t have pets, every 60 days if you do), there are a few other things you can do to keep your air conditioner working in tip-top shape for as long as possible.
One thing you can do is clean, or have cleaned, the air conditioner’s evaporator coil at least once a year. You should be able to check on how it’s doing every time you change your filter to determine whether it needs more frequent care than that. The cleaner your air conditioner’s coil, the more efficiently it will run.
You can also have the ducts in your attic and/or crawlspace tightened and cleaned. Cleaning them removes any excess particles of dust and pollutants that your air conditioner could recirculate and tightening them reduces the number of particles that can get in there in the first place.
Other Ways to Freshen Up Your Indoor Air
Let’s face it – we shouldn’t put all the burden of cleaning up your air on your air conditioner, or you will run it constantly and it will never get a break – which will wear it out sooner. Instead, try some of these other methods to help clean up your air, which will result in less work for your air conditioner to do in the long run:
- Invest in an air purifier, and run it near the most trafficked area in the home, like by the front door
- Open the windows and doors, even on colder days, just for a little while to allow the air to circulate for a bit
- Do any activities outside, if possible, that generate chemicals or pollutants that could otherwise compromise your indoor air, such as recreational painting, smoking, or repairs involving welding or soldering
- Open the windows when painting indoors or while cooking to better circulate more of those particles that could pollute your indoor air
