As temperatures start to drop in the Henderson, Nevada, it’s time to change the settings on your thermostat. Try these four tips to save energy and lower your costs while maximizing your home’s smart thermostat.
Lower the Nighttime Temperature
Winter brings chilly nighttime temperatures to the Las Vegas area, but there’s no reason to heat your home at night if you’re not awake to enjoy the warm air. Instead, program your smart thermostat to lower your home’s temperature at night. The Department of Energy recommends turning the thermostat down 10 to 15 degrees for an eight-hour period. This simple change can help you save up to 15 percent on your heating bill each year.
Turn Up the Heat Only When You Need It
In addition to lowering the temperature at night, make sure to turn down the thermostat while away at work or school during the day. Set your smart thermostat to return to a comfortable temperature no more than 20 or 30 minutes before you plan to wake up or return home. This gives your heating system ample time to warm your home.
Override the Thermostat When Necessary
One of the best parts of a smart or programmable thermostat is that you can override it whenever you want. That means you can program the thermostat to optimize energy usage when you’re asleep or away from home, but you’ll never have to suffer through uncomfortably hot or cold temperatures as a result. If your schedule changes, you can easily adjust the thermostat remotely.
Heat Just the Rooms You Use
If multiple rooms in your home typically go unused throughout winter, consider investing in zoning systems. By installing a system of dampers in your home’s ductwork and introducing a different smart thermostat for each section, you can effectively divide your home into zones. With zoning systems in place, you can easily heat only the rooms and zones that need it the most.
