Replacing an air conditioner is a costly experience, so it’s understandable that you may try to get a few extra months or even years out of a system that is constantly causing you stress. But when does the time finally come when it makes sense to replace your air conditioner?
The standard answer to this question is that, if your air conditioner maintenance is between 10 and 15 years old, and it starts giving you trouble regularly, then it’s time to call it quits. However, some air conditioners do not live as long as the average air conditioner should. In those cases, you’ll need to know what to look for to determine when it is time to replace your air conditioner unit.
Whether you need a repair or a replacement, Ambient Edge can help. We are well-versed in all makes and models of air conditioners and, if you’re looking to replace yours, we can recommend a unit that is perfect for the size and space of your home. Give us a call to get started.
Frequent Repairs
Regular air conditioner maintenance is a must to keep your unit running in top order. However, your air conditioner is like a car in the sense that after a while, it becomes more expensive to continue repairing it than it is to just replace the whole thing altogether. If the system is no longer covered under warranty, you really don’t want to have to keep shelling out for costly repairs. This is a sign that you need to throw in the towel on your current system.
Excessive Dust
If you have been noticing a significant increase in the amount of dust in your home, your air conditioner may be the culprit, particularly if you have central air conditioning. This may be the result of a leak in your air ducts, which is allowing the dust to blow through whenever the air comes on. In this case, it’s easier, and more cost-effective, to replace the unit than to attempt to repair it.
Excessive Noise
Sometimes you can fix a noisy air conditioner and the problem goes away. However, an excessive amount of noise is the air conditioner’s death rattle – it’s telling you that a full-on replacement is in order. Noise can signal an issue with the duct system being too small for your living space, though you’d notice this after a recent installation.
Else, the excessive grinding, rattling, banging or squeaking that is coming from your unit may signal a problem with the indoor coil. If that’s the case, then it’s definitely time to invest in a new air conditioning unit
Moisture / Leaking
If you’ve discovered moisture or a leakage coming from your AC, this too can mean it’s time for a replacement. You should call a professional to help diagnose the problem, but chances are that your unit is either leaking refrigerant or creating pools of water – neither of which are good.
Leaked refrigerant can pose a health risk, and excess water anywhere can create both mold and water damage which, depending on where the leak is, can compromise your home’s foundation. If you notice more than just condensation around your unit, then it’s probably time for a replacement.
R 22, or Freon
If your air conditioner uses R 22, or Freon, then it’s also time to replace your unit. The federal government is phasing out Freon so, as a result, the cost of what remains is expected to soar. This means that if you develop a leak or have any other issue with your unit’s refrigerant, it will cost you an arm and a leg to refill it. And, eventually, you won’t be able to find Freon anywhere anyway.
This may not be as urgent of an issue as the others, but just know that if your unit uses Freon, you should probably start setting money aside for a replacement before the unit’s expected lifespan is up.
