A home energy audit is a great way to find out how much energy your household uses, and how to reduce your utility costs. Not only that, but using less energy also reduces your overall environmental impact. Once you know where you’re using more energy than you should be, it’s easier to determine what upgrades and improvements you need to make to reduce your overall cost.
Ambient Edge specializes in providing home energy audits that can save you money on your monthly utility bill. Call us to schedule your audit today.
What to Expect from the Home Energy Audit Process
If you’ve never had a home energy audit performed before, here is a brief idea of what to expect once our energy auditor arrives.
The auditor will examine both the interior and exterior of your home and look for any potential issues. It’s a good idea to prepare a list ahead of time of those issues that you already know exist, such as a drafty window or doorway, to save the auditor time and to point out anything he may have otherwise missed. You should also let him know the temperature you tend to keep your thermostat on, as this too affects your overall energy usage.
The auditor will also check your attic and basement or crawlspace to ensure all ducts and insulation are installed and working properly. He’ll make a note of any repairs that need to be done that could otherwise lead to a breakdown that will cause your home to hemorrhage energy.
He’ll also make a note of any equipment that he knows is or seems old and will recommend you replace it. Typically, any equipment or appliances over 10 years old are nearing their replacement date, so it’s a good idea to replace them soon for more energy-efficient models.
He’ll also check out the kinds of lightbulbs you use in your home and, if you aren’t already, he’ll suggest more energy-efficient ones such as LED or CFL light bulbs, which will help reduce your energy usage and monthly utility cost.
The “Blower Door Test”
During your home energy audit, our energy auditor will perform something called the “blower door test.” What this does is check for any leaks in your home where the cooled air (in the summer) and warmed air (in the winter) is getting out.
To perform the blower door test, the auditor will set up a machine that depressurizes your home. Then, he uses an infrared light to determine where outside air is coming in. This is an accurate depiction of where exactly in your home a draft exists, and how severe it is. Our HVAC technicians can then use that information to patch up the draft, sealing the energy in your home where it belongs.
When Should You Get an Energy Audit?
The best time to have a home energy audit done is right before you buy a house. This way you can fix any problems before you even move in. However, if you already own a home, then we recommend having a home energy audit done every 5 years. This ensures that all your appliances and equipment are running as efficiently as possible, and that you can get in front of a problem when it creeps up before it becomes a significant issue.
And speaking of buying homes, a home energy audit actually improves the resale value of your home. This is because potential buyers can know right up front how much energy the home requires in order to function efficiently – and they can also save money on having the home energy audit performed themselves, provided you’ve had it done recently. So, if you’re looking to sell your home soon, you should definitely add a home energy audit to your immediate plans.
